TEACHING

Tori is Professor in Jazz performance and Jazz composition at Leeds Conservatoire, visiting lecturer at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and also regularly tutors ensembles at the Royal Academy of Music. She has taught and run workshops for jazz programs at most of the major UK Conservatoires and Music Colleges such as the Royal Academy of Music, Trinity Laban College of Music, the Guildhall School of Music, Birmingham Conservatoire, Bath University, Leeds Conservatoire etc. She regularly teaches on summer schools such as the National Youth Jazz Collective and the Welsh summer school alongside the likes of Pete Churchill, Nikki Iles, Huw Warren, Norma Winstone, Jason Yarde and Liam Noble. She runs workshops and masterclasses regularly all over the UK including courses at the Sage, Gateshead, Tomorrows Warriors at the Southbank in London and at the Scarborough Jazz Festival 2023.

ONE TO ONE TEACHING -

Over the years Tori has developed her own teaching materials in the form of two teaching books which include supplementary video demonstrations and is currently researching and developing new skills to aid a healthy approach to practice which she hopes to feed back into her Conservatoire teaching and materials. She has also developed the syllabus for the Contemporary Improvisation module at Leeds Conservatoire and the flute syllabus for Newham Borough Council.

BIG BAND CHARTS -

Tori’s big band music is being rehearsed and performed by the Leeds Conservatoire Contemporary big band in Dec 2023 alongside the music of her duo partner, the award winning jazz pianist Alcyona Mick. As part of the London Jazz Orchestra, the two musicians have been building up a repertoire of big band arrangements with a range of influences including Hermeto Pascoal and Kenny Wheeler and these act well as a springboard to help the students unravel many skills in terms of reading and soloing over odd time signatures, section playing, soli writing, and a variety of compositional and arranging skills from a range of influences.

WORKSHOPS -

DUO - The duo recently tutored at the Scarborough Jazz Festival and for an NYJC summer school ensemble which featured much of the new music on the album, including one of the tracks which was inspired by birdsong and won the Ivor Novello Award for Jazz Ensemble writing. With the material from the new album they can feature the use of birdsong, rearrangements of jazz standards and experiments with odd times and free approaches as a springboard for teaching improvisational and compositional techniques in an accessible manner to all age groups. They have recently been invited for further masterclasses and mentoring sessions at the Royal Academy of Music and Leeds Conservatoire

SILENT FILM -The duo can also offer a workshop on performing to silent film as an improvisational/compositional springboard for students. Alcyona Mick attended the National Film School after her Conservatoire training and has not only written for TV/film but also performed solo to silent film at venues all over the UK. They have worked successfully incorporating film as part of their workshop technique at a number of institutions including at the National Youth Jazz Collective Summer School and have a number of materials prepared to tutor using this method as long as a projector/TV screen is accessible.
